A vehicle's braking system is comprised of many moving parts. One of them is the brake caliper, which helps slow your car down when driving around Miami, Hollywood, or Miami Beach.
Our team at Audi North Miami created this guide to explain exactly what a brake caliper is. We'll also tell you when you should have them replaced, to help keep you safe on the road.

Explaining the Role of a Brake Caliper
An Audi brake caliper is part of the disc brake (or brake rotor) system, and it houses the brake pads and pistons. It fits like a clamp onto the brake rotor to stop the wheel from turning.
Whenever you push down on the brake pedal, brake fluid will create pressure on the pistons inside the caliper. This forces the brake pads against the rotor, which then slows down your vehicle.
How Often Do You Need to Replace Brake Calipers?
Brake calipers usually don't have to be replaced until your car reaches 75,000 miles (or, between seven and 10 years). But that's a general rule of thumb, as you'll want to check your owner's manual for the exact mileage interval.
Regardless, you may notice some warning signs that indicate a replacement is needed earlier than that.
So, what are the symptoms of a bad brake caliper? There are several to look out for, such as...
Squeaking or Squealing Brakes
If you hear a squeaking sound when pushing down on the brakes, then the caliper may be loose. Or, it could be sticking or binding to the rotor. In any of these cases, the caliper can't properly do its job, and it could lead to early brake wear.
Vehicle Pulling to One Side
Brake calipers are exposed to a great deal of heat whenever the brakes are applied. This can sometimes result in the caliper seizing and not automatically retracting like it should. When that happens, there may be a constant drag on the affected wheel, resulting in the car pulling to one side.
Brake Fluid Leak
As we mentioned before, the caliper uses brake fluid pressure to extend the piston and slow down your automobile. A rubber seal and boot keep the fluid inside the braking system, so it can help the caliper do its job.
Because of the constant exposure to heat, the seal will eventually wear out and start leaking brake fluid. Once there's a leak, the pressure-sealing capacity is compromised, and you may have a tougher time bringing your vehicle to a stop.
