Our
team at Audi North Miami wants to ensure that our Miami, Miami Beach,
and Hollywood neighbors are as prepared as they can be if the unexpected
occurs when it comes to their vehicle. That's why we've compiled the
following list of potential issues that can cause your car to vibrate
when you're traveling at high speeds to make sure you're informed,
whether you're currently witnessing vibrating at this time or not.
There are several potential reasons your car could be vibrating at higher speeds. We'll explore some of the most common possibilities below. Be sure to contact us with any questions you may have!
Reasons Why Your Car is Vibrating at Higher Speeds
1. Your Tires Are Out of Balance
If your tires need to be balanced, you might not even notice the vibrating until you get to about 55 MPH or so. While it's possible for the entire car to shake with this issue, it's also possible for it to be localized in the steering wheel. If the vibrating is a result of a tire imbalance, your tire would be exhibiting unusual wear and tear in the form of several flat spots. A simple balancing will stop the uneven wear from continuing as well as the shaking.
2. Low Tire Pressure
Vibrating can also be caused by underinflated tires. To ensure your tires are containing the right amount of air pressure, remember to consult your owner's manual before putting air in them.
3. Uneven Tire Wear
If the vibrating you're experiencing is a result of uneven wear, getting them rotated will do the trick.
4. Wheel Bearings
If your wheel bearings are worn down or damaged, you would primarily feel the vibrations in the steering wheel.Â
5. Tie Rod Ends
If tie rod ends are the culprit, the vibrating would go away when the steering wheel is straight and show up again when you're making your way around curves.
6. Ball Joints
If one or more of your ball joints need to be replaced, you'll experience the opposite of the above symptom. In this case, the steering wheel will be smooth through curves and shake when the car straightens out.
7. An Issue with the Engine
As you get into the higher speeds, if you distinctly feel vibrating coming from the engine, this could be a result of a lack of power, fuel, or oxygen getting to it. The spark plugs, fuel filter, and air filter should all be checked and replaced as needed.
8. Worn-Out Rotor
If you feel vibrating when you apply the brake, it could mean one of your rotors is warped or worn down.
9. Damaged Brake Caliper
If the vibrating starts around 50 MPH and is followed by a distinct burning smell when the vehicle comes to a stop, it could mean that you have a worn-out caliper pin.
10. Bent Axle
A bent or otherwise damaged axle can also cause vibrations. These vibrations are sure to worsen the faster you go.
